Assisted Stretching Brighton – Go Further Than You Can Alone
Flexibility doesn’t change overnight. But it does change faster when someone else is guiding the movement. Assisted stretching uses a therapist’s hands, body weight and technique to take your body into ranges it can’t reach alone. Over time and with regular work, that adds up to real improvements in how you move, recover and feel.
What Is Assisted Stretching?
Assisted stretching is therapist led stretching where I guide your body through a range of movements you can’t achieve alone. It uses two main approaches.
PNF stretching, which stands for Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation, involves a cycle of contracting and relaxing the muscle to trick the nervous system into allowing a deeper stretch. When a muscle contracts against resistance and then relaxes, it can be taken further into its range than it would normally allow. The results are noticeable and often immediate.
Passive stretching uses sustained holds at end range, letting the muscle gradually release without any effort on your part. I support the weight of the limb throughout so the body can fully let go rather than holding on to stabilise itself.
I also incorporate myofascial stretching techniques such as arm pulls and leg pulls. These are gentler, indirect holds that work with the fascial system rather than forcing the muscle into a stretch. The sensation is subtle but the release can be profound, particularly for people who find deeper stretching uncomfortable or who carry a lot of tension through the whole body rather than in specific areas.
All three approaches go significantly further than anything you can achieve on a mat by yourself.

What to Expect From Assisted Stretching
Assisted stretching is offered as an add-on to your massage session. At the end of your treatment I’ll guide you through a series of stretches targeting the areas we’ve worked on during the session.
You don’t need to do anything except relax and follow my guidance. Wear or bring comfortable clothing you can move in, as stretching works best without the towels used during massage. Sports shorts and a t-shirt are ideal.
Each stretch is held or cycled through slowly and deliberately. The PNF work involves short bursts of gentle resistance followed by a deeper hold. The passive holds are slow and sustained. The myofascial pulls are light and unhurried, following the body’s own rhythm rather than pushing against it. You’ll feel a deep stretch sensation throughout but no sharp pain. I’ll always check in and adjust based on how your body is responding.
Assisted stretching is available as a free add-on to any massage session. Just ask during our consultation.
Frequently Asked Questions About Assisted Stretching
Do I need to be flexible to try it?
Not at all. Assisted stretching is most effective for people who aren’t flexible. The less range you have, the more noticeable the improvement tends to be after a single session.
What is a myofascial arm or leg pull?
Deep tissue is a technique, sports massage is a broader treatment approach. Sports massage combines multiple methods tailored specifically to active bodies.
Can I book it as a standalone treatment?
Currently it is offered as an add-on to massage sessions rather than as a standalone booking. Get in touch if you’d like to discuss options.
Is it painful?
You’ll feel a deep stretch which can be intense in tight areas but it should never be sharp or painful. I’ll always work within your comfort level and ease off if anything feels too much.
