Most people book a massage when something hurts badly enough that they can’t ignore it anymore. They come in, feel significantly better, and then don’t think about it again until the same problem comes back three months later. Sound familiar?
It’s one of the most common patterns I see at my studio in East Brighton. And the honest answer to how often you should get a massage is that it depends, but for most people the answer is more often than they currently do.
One Session vs Regular Treatment: What's the Difference?
A single massage session can do a lot. It reduces tension, calms the nervous system, improves circulation and gives the body a proper reset. For some people one session is genuinely enough, at least for a while.
But here’s the thing. One session treats what’s there right now. It doesn’t address the patterns that created the problem in the first place. If you sit at a desk all day, train hard three times a week, or work a physically demanding job, the tension builds back up. The body returns to its default holding pattern. And before long you’re back where you started.
Regular massage works differently. Each session builds on the last. The tissue gradually changes. Patterns that have been held for years start to shift. You stop managing a problem and start actually getting on top of it.
How Often Should You Get a Sports Massage in Brighton?
If you train regularly, sports massage should be part of your routine rather than a reaction to injury. Brighton has a serious training community. Runners preparing for the Brighton Marathon, Hyrox athletes pushing hard at local gyms, cyclists heading out through the South Downs, open water swimmers at Sea Lanes. These are bodies under consistent load.
For anyone training regularly I’d suggest every two to three weeks during heavier training blocks. This keeps the tissue in good condition, helps you recover faster between sessions and catches small problems before they become injuries. During lighter periods, once a month works well for most people.
How Often Should You Get a Deep Tissue Massage?
Deep tissue massage is particularly effective for chronic tension, recurring pain and stubborn areas that don’t respond to lighter work. If you’re coming in for the first time with a long standing problem, starting with sessions every one to two weeks gives the tissue a chance to make real progress.
Once things settle, monthly maintenance keeps the body in good condition without over-treating. Most people find a rhythm of every four to six weeks works well for general upkeep.
What About Relaxation Massage?
Relaxation massage is one of the most underused tools for overall health. Most people treat it as an occasional luxury rather than a regular practice. But the research is clear. Regular relaxation massage reduces cortisol, improves sleep quality, lowers blood pressure and has a cumulative positive effect on the nervous system.
Once a month is a good starting point for general wellbeing. If you’re going through a particularly stressful period, every two to three weeks makes a noticeable difference to how you feel and function day to day.
Myofascial Release: How Frequently?
Myofascial release works differently to regular massage. It works on the connective tissue surrounding the muscles rather than the muscles themselves and the changes it produces are cumulative and gradual rather than immediate.
For people using myofascial release to address chronic pain or long standing restrictions, weekly or fortnightly sessions at the start allow each session to build on the last. Once progress is established, spacing out to monthly maintenance works well. Most people notice meaningful change after three to five sessions.
A General Guide by Goal
If you’re managing a specific injury or chronic problem, every one to two weeks to start then monthly once things improve.
If you train regularly and want to maintain performance and prevent injury, every two to three weeks during heavy training and monthly during lighter periods.
If you want general wellbeing and stress management, once a month is a solid baseline. Every two to three weeks if life is particularly demanding.
If you’ve never had a massage before and want to see how your body responds, start with one session and see how long the effects last. That will tell you a lot about what frequency makes sense for you.
What I See in Brighton
The clients who get the best results are the ones who treat massage as maintenance rather than crisis management. They don’t wait until something breaks down. They come in regularly, their bodies respond faster, and they spend far less time dealing with pain and restriction overall.
Brighton is a city that takes health seriously. The wellness culture here is genuinely progressive. People who train at the seafront, work demanding jobs across the city, and live active lives are increasingly treating regular massage the same way they treat going to the gym. Not as a treat. As part of how they look after themselves.
That shift in thinking makes a bigger difference than any single session ever could.
