Cupping Therapy

Cupping Therapy Brighton – Deep Tissue Decompression for Tight Muscles

Most massage works by pressing down into the muscle. Cupping does the opposite. It lifts the tissue up. That simple difference is why cupping reaches tension that hands alone sometimes can’t get to. If you’ve never tried it, the results tend to surprise people.

What Is Cupping Therapy?

Cupping uses small silicone or vacuum cups placed on the skin. The suction pulls the soft tissue upward, creating space between the layers. Fresh blood flows in. Waste products drain out. Tight tissue begins to let go.

It’s one of the oldest treatments in the world. Used in Chinese, Middle Eastern and Egyptian medicine for thousands of years. Today sports therapists, physios and massage therapists use it regularly because it works.

How Cupping Works

Cups can be left in one spot or moved across the skin. Leaving them still targets a specific area of tightness. Moving them covers a larger area and works well alongside massage.

The suction brings stagnant blood to the surface, stimulates the lymphatic system and creates room for fresh oxygenated blood to flow in. The result is softer tissue, better circulation and faster recovery.

Interesting note from Coach Chong of Hyper Arch Fascia Training puts it:

“Massage feels good, but it is mostly applied to the superficial layer and in some cases may not affect the deep fascial layers enough. Cupping provides the extra push to target deeper fascia, ideal for athletes with strong, fascia-driven systems. However, for individuals with weak glutes or compromised feet, results might vary since their fascia matrix is less optimised and will respond differently. Perhaps now you understand more and more why individuals see a large range of value and results from doing the same protocol. The catalyst really is the fascia internal foundation.”

Is Cupping Right for You?

Not afraid of the bruise marks it leaves for 1-4 weeks

The circular marks cupping leaves are temporary, usually fading within a few days to a week. If you’re happy to wear short sleeves or a vest knowing they might be visible, that’s all the green light you need.

Athletes and active people

Runners, cyclists, gym goers and Hyrox athletes carry a lot of muscular load week after week. Cupping is especially good on the legs, glutes and upper back where that load tends to build up.

People with stubborn tight spots

If there’s an area that always comes back no matter how much you stretch or get massaged, cupping often shifts it when nothing else has.

Anyone recovering from a hard training block or event

After a race, a big gym week or a tough physical challenge, cupping helps flush out what’s built up and gets the body moving properly again.

People who want to try something different

If you’ve had massage before and want to add something that works in a completely different way, cupping is worth a go. Most people who try it ask for it every time after that.

What to Expect From a Cupping Treatment

Cupping is an add-on to your massage rather than a standalone treatment. It works best combined with sports massage, deep tissue or myofascial release.

The cups go on the relevant areas, usually the back, glutes, legs or shoulders. You’ll feel a pulling sensation as the tissue lifts. It’s firm but not painful. Most people find it deeply satisfying once they settle in.

You may get circular marks where the cups have been. These are not bruises in the traditional sense. They are caused by small capillaries being drawn to the surface and typically fade within three to ten days. The darker the mark, the more tension was present in that area.

Cupping Is No Longer Just for Elite Athletes

Cupping has moved well beyond traditional Chinese medicine clinics. You’ll find it in CrossFit boxes, physiotherapy practices, professional sports changing rooms and increasingly in massage studios like mine. Brighton has picked that up quickly. It’s a city that doesn’t wait for wellness trends to go mainstream before trying them. If it works, people here are already doing it.

What Our Clients Say About Us

Following a very emotionally difficult six weeks I could feel the stress building in my body. Especially the neck and shoulders. Jack was very warm and welcoming and I felt at ease explaining my situation to him. He worked intuitively targeting the areas that needed the most work. I have tried many masseurs over the years and can honestly say that Jack is one of the best. Maybe even the best I've had. I have no hesitation in recommending him.
